Why Store Food
There are many reasons to store food. Some may include job layoff, natural disasters, winter storms, illness, increasing food prices, terrorist attack, and more. All our food is packaged for long-term storage. |
|
Where to Begin
First start with storing water. To exist you need at least a gallon of water per person for a two-week period. You will probably want to store extra for washing. A good source for learning how to store water and treat contaminated water is from the Making the Best of Basics book.
Next, start with the basic dehydrated foods such as wheat, salt, sugar, dry milk, and oil. Marlene’s Magic with Food Storage shows you what you can make with a few basic ingredients and what you can make as you add a few more ingredients until you have a complete storage program.
How Much to Store
Everyone eats differently, but an excellent source on determining how much food for your family is the Making the Best of Basics Book. |

How Long Will My Food Keep?
You will want to store from 40-68 degrees for the best shelf life. Store off the cement on a shelf or pallet. Keep away from light as much as possible. Dairy products have the shortest shelf life 3-5 years, fruits and vegetables store about 6-8 years, brown rice stores 2 years, white rice 10 years, wheat 10+ years, Mountain House freeze-dried foods store 20 years. Some good books for using and rotating food storage are Mix-A-Meal Cookbook and Cookin’ with Home Storage. |
